Kristin’s Litmus Live session will answer the question: Why did email choose us? Uncover the ways email found us, and how to use your unique strengths to advance your career in email. Plus, learn how to be great at some of the non-email parts of your job.

Let’s find out more about Kristin…

How did you end up in email marketing?

I was a copywriter at a life insurance company in 2008, writing riveting brochures about “these turbulent economic times.” My company wanted us to send emails on behalf of our sales reps, and so we decided to use the email company that happened to have an office in our building… ExactTarget.

I quickly realized I liked email even more than copywriting. I moved to NYC a few years later and got a community manager/writing job, but the guy sitting across from me needed help with something in ExactTarget, and I was able to help him. My job quickly became managing email there. From then on, I only worked in email.

What do you love most about it?

I love the community around email! Everyone is so willing to help each other and share information. We have such a weird line of work that’s constantly changing, and it’s so nice to know we’re not alone.

What’s challenging about email?

We have such a weird line of work that’s constantly changing.

I recently switched jobs after being in my previous one for more than 6 years. While I was very good at a very specific niche that I did (managing a large enterprise Salesforce Marketing Cloud account for a large nonprofit), I quickly found out that I had fallen behind in the other areas of email that hadn’t been my focus.

I love learning new things and finding new challenges, so I’m excited to see what’s to come.

What can people look forward to in your Litmus Live session?

We all know that we don’t choose email, email chooses us. My session is going to dig into WHY email chose us, using research from a survey of email geeks. You can look forward to learning about why people who are 37 this year are particularly primed to be email marketers, and how your love of theatre makes you a great email marketer.

What are you looking forward to most at Litmus Live?

Everything! The sessions look awesome. Since the format’s a little different this year with sessions pre-recorded, as a speaker, I’ll actually get to watch the sessions instead of hyperventilating in preparation for my own session.

How do you think email marketing will change in the coming years?

I think we actually might see a shift to less personalized email content—not because we think that’s a good strategy (I don’t!), but because people are becoming more aware of data security with changes like iOS 15.

I think we’ll see other related channels, like SMS and even direct mail, working together with email even more. For a long time, we’ve seen email as the top converting channel, but others are starting to catch up. I think it’ll be interesting to see how marketers use them all together to create the personalized experiences we’ve been doing with email.

What’s your favorite email joke or pun?

At a job about 10 years ago, a co-worker and I were doing a presentation about email analytics, and she put “Email marketing — More than a blast!” on one of the slides, and I never forgot it. I love it.
