Although a broader concept about human behavior, costly signaling absolutely applies to advertising. What, after all, is the value of a social media ad? While highly effective, social ads are cheap, so everyone can buy them and crowd the space.
The brand versus performance debate is broken. “It works very well in our org chart – but not in real life,” said Paolo Provinciali, vice-president of marketing, growth, performance and operations at LinkedIn. “In my mind, all marketing is performance. It’s just a matter of striking the right balance between short term and long term.” Joined by Preeti Croke of Analytic Partners in The Drum Studio at Cannes, Provinciali called for a “recovering performance marketers” club – and a mindset shift.
